Dutch
East India Company mariners pioneered Indian Ocean Sea Routes during the 17th
and 18th centuries. All too often for the brave navigators the jagged reefs and
treacherous coast proved to be the ships graveyard. Three vessels, Batavia
(1629), Zuydorp (1712), Zeewijk (1727) were all wrecked. Geraldton Museum
displays items recovered from the shipwrecks and survivor camp sites.
Over 23,000
people live in Geraldton.
