Carnarvon is located
904kms from Perth on the North West Coast of Western Australia in the Gascoyne
Region.
Carnarvon aptly described
as "the sun's winter home" is at the mouth of the Gascoyne River and
is the commercial centre of the Gascoyne district. The abundance of fish at
Carnarvon is possibly the major attraction but the irrigated soils of the river
flats are well known for the production of many millions of dollars worth of
luscious fruit and vegetables such as bananas, tomatoes and beans. Salt
production and the pastoral industry and fishing, especially prawns are
important to the economy which supports a population of approximately 8,000.
The Parish Church is St
George's (built 1907) and is located in Francis Street Carnarvon. The church is
built of locally made bricks with gothic design, the windows of cathedral glass,
and the bell hangs in a turret over the door.
The Revd Brian Fyffe and his
wife Annie minister to the Anglican community of Carnarvon.
